BSISD plans one-stop registration
Thursday, 09 April 2009
By STEVE REAGAN
Staff Writer
Big Spring Independent School District officials are planning a “one-stop” approach to kindergarten registration this spring. In a switch from previous years, BSISD will take a centralized approach to registering kindergarteners for the coming school year.

Instead of having parents go to the individual campuses to register their children, the district will have a city-wide registration from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. April 23 at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

Children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1 and reside within the BSISD boundaries may be registered during the event, said Vickie Cheyne, PIEMS coordinator for the school district.

Parents must bring their child's birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security card, proof of residency (such as a utility bill) and the parent/guardian's driver's license.

“We thought we'd have all the parents come to Garrett Coliseum instead of having them go to the different campuses,” Cheyne said. “This way, we can try to get it done all in one day.”

Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services will also be on hand (from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) to provide immunizations, Cheyne said.

She noted that the change came about because the district is trying to streamline the registration process.

“We thought this would be more efficient,” Cheyne said. “Also, the district is analyzing whether to change the attendance zones for each campus, so we thought this approach would be less confusing for everyone.”

Because of the possibility that attendance zones might change next school year, parents will not be able to definitely learn which campus their child will be attending in September, Cheyne said. Parents will learn their child's campus prior to the beginning of the next school year.

BSISD has seen an upsurge in kindergarten enrollment the past few years and Cheyne sees no reason for that to change anytime soon.

“If we have a good response (April 23), I think that will give us a good indication of what our enrollment numbers will be,” she said. “However, I have to no reason to anticipate a downturn in those numbers.”

For more information on the registration process, call the school district's central office at 264-3600.
