Students will be recognized for their achievements in a variety of areas, including academics, leadership and citizenship, said Susie Teeters, administrative assistant to HC Vice President Javier Flores.
The top honor to be presented tonight is the President's Award, given to the college student who excels in several areas of college life, Teeters said.
“This is an award that the faculty and staff vote on, with College President (Dr. Cheryl) Sparks having the final say,” Teeters said. “It is presented to the student who is an 'overcomer' — who's really excelled the entire time they've been here.”
The American Legion Award will be presented to a male and female student who have shown “outstanding leadership, character and citizenship qualities during their time here,” Teeters said. Those students also are selected by a vote from college employees, she added.
Also to be presented is the All-USA Academic Award, given to the top students from Phi Beta Kappa, the college's academic honors fraternity.
Other awards include the educator of the year — the top HC teacher as selected by a vote of the student body — and the Outstanding Workforce Education Student.
College students will also be recognized for their participation in various college activities. In all, about 300 students will be recognized at tonight's event, Teeters said.
