The Big Spring Herald is a daily newspaper which publishes Monday through Friday afternoons and on Sunday morning of each week. The online edition is updated daily, Monday through Friday and Saturday afternoons. The Big Spring Herald employs more than 35 people, with about one fourth of those employees making up the news department. The newspaper was founded in 1904 as the Big Spring Weekly Herald by T.E. Jordan and his brother-in-law W.G. Hayden in competition with several other weekly papers and two existing daily newspapers. The Herald is the sole survivor of seven earlier publications. The publication was purchased by Harte-Hanks Newspapers in the 1930's. It was sold to Garden State Newspapers in 1989 and two years later purchased by Thomson Newspapers. American Publishing Co. bought the Herald in 1994. The Herald was purchased in September of 1998 by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.(CHNI) of Birmingham, Ala., and sold to Horizon Publications 2003 Inc. in 2003.
