By THOMAS JENKINS Staff Writer The Big Spring City Council is set to meet Tuesday evening, with mostly routine items making up the meeting's agenda.
Among the consent items set for final reading are: A resolution authorizing the auction of Howard County Trustee properties to the highest bidder for cash, without reservation; and a resolution authorizing the city manager or a designated director to execute routine agreements between the city and other parties for short term lease, rental or use of city facilities. The second resolution would also authorize the city manager to execute repair and maintenance contracts. Also during the meeting, the council is expected to award bids for utility upgrades on Lancaster, part of the change order for the city street bond project that will allow the municipality to use left over funds to make repairs to Lancaster; and award bids for asphalt and aggregate for the city's seal coat project. The council is expected to elect a mayor pro tem during the meeting, as well as consider first reading of a resolution to approve the signatures necessary for the city depository contract. The Big Spring Police Department will also get some attention Tuesday, as the council gets ready to vote on the first reading of a budget amendment that will allow for computer upgrades and new software for the law enforcement agency. Taxes will also take center stage during the meeting, as the council considers first reading of an annual ordinance that adds a 20 percent penalty to delinquent taxes received after July 1 to cover the city's cost to recover the taxes. The council is also expected to call for a special work session June 2 to discuss possible actions concerning the municipal swimming pool, which the council decided not to open this summer due to its inability to meet federal regulations. The meeting will get under way at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth Street. Contact Staff Writer Thomas Jenkins at 263-7331 ext. 232 or by e-mail at
