By JONATHAN HULL Sports Editor The honors keep pouring in for the Forsan Lady Buffaloes state champion softball team.
Four Lady Buffs were named to the Class A All-Tournament team Sunday morning. Representing the state champions were juniors Amanda Longorio and Shelby Jones, sophomore Kevy O'Brien and freshman Ambra Hill. Longorio was named to the team as a pitcher as she picked up the win in both games. In the Lady Buffs 2-1 victory over Alto in the finals, Longorio allowed one earned run on six hits and no walks. In the first game against Iola, which was also won by a 2-1 score, Longorio walked three of the first four batters she face, but gave up just one unearned run in the contest. She ended up surrendering just six hits and six walks, while striking out 10 batters. Longorio was just as proficient at the plate, going 4-for-6 in the tournament. Jones caught the final out of the championship game, charging from her position at second to catch a pop fly. Jones was honored as the top second baseman at the tournament, despite just moving to the position late in the Lady Buffs' playoff run. Jones had a RBI in each game, driving in the go-ahead run with a single in the seventh inning of the semifinal win over Iola. She knocked in Forsan's first run in the first inning against Alto. Jones finished the tournament 2-for-7 with two RBI. O'Brien has been a two-year starter for the Lady Buffs at first base. She was named to the All-Tournament team despite going hitless in both games. It was O'Brien's defensive abilities that stuck out, though. In Game 1, she corralled a ball hit hard on the ground to her right. O'Brien stabbed at the ball and was able to secure it in her glove. Despite her momentum taking her away from the bag, she was able to turn and toss to Jones, who was covering first, for an out. On more than one occasion, O'Brien came off the bag to secure a wild throw by one of her teammates, only to keep her composure and tag the runner out. Hill, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship game, started Forsan's title bid against Alto with a bang. She crushed a pitch to the left field wall to lead off the game with a double. Hill then stole third and came in to score on a fielder's choice hit by Jones for the game's first run. The double was her only hit of the tournament, but her fielding abilities also stuck out. Hill initiated a double play in the second inning of the championship game. After putting together an MVP-caliber performance Saturday morning, Hill then made the short trip from McCombs field to the state track meet at Myers Stadium to compete in the 100-meter hurdles. She placed fourth. Contact Sports Editor Jonathan Hull by calling 263-7331, ext. 237, or by e-mailing
