By JONATHAN HULL Sports Editor It was a banner year for the Big Spring Steers baseball program.
The 2009 Steers made the first postseason appearance by a Big Spring squad since 2002. Not bad for a group that hadn't won a district game in three years heading into the season. The fruits of the Steers' labors were evident with the release of the 4-4A All-District team. Six players were named to either the first or second All-District team, while three others received honorable mention. Four Steers were deemed worthy by the coaches in District 4-4A as first-teamers. Seniors Cade Hollandsworth, Kaegan Hunt and Jeremy Solis and junior Matt Ritchey were all given first-team honors. Hollandsworth turned out to be a surprise ace for the Steers pitching staff. He was consistently relied upon to pitch in Big Spring's most important games. When not on the mound, Hollandsworth manned first base and batted clean up in the order. Hollandsworth will be moving on to West Texas A&M University on a football scholarship. Hunt was the leading batter for the Steers, keeping his average around the .500 mark the entire season. He has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. Solis will be joining Hunt in Hobbs. It was Solis' abilities in the field that stuck out the most. He has made just three errors in three seasons while playing third base. Ritchey was Big Spring's No. 2 pitcher and ranked among the top RBI leaders on the team for a second straight season. He was voted onto the All-District squad as an outfielder, manning left for the Steers. Ritchey recently gave a verbal commitment to Baylor University to play football beginning in the fall of 2011. Two more Steers received enough votes to qualify for 4-4A's second team. Senior Jon Benavides was voted on as a shortstop, while junior Martin Yanez made the squad as an outfielder. Benavides, who also signed with University of the Southwest, saw time at short, pitcher and in the outfield during his senior campaign. Yanez batted lead off for the Steers and was considered one of the offensive catalysts. He played center field all season. Receiving honorable mention were seniors Rance Terry and Colby Landis and junior Steven Henry. Terry was Big Spring's everyday catcher and one of the most improved hitters in the lineup. He's signed a letter of intent to play college ball at Lubbock Christian University. Landis was Big Spring's only left-handed pitcher and also played in the outfield. Henry was primarily used as a designated hitter. District 4-4A awards Co-MVP: Lance Ratliff, Sr., Frenship; Jordan Richburg, Sr., Frenship. Newcomer of the Year: Josh Vasquez, Soph., Frenship.
