BSISD staffing nearly complete
Wednesday, 12 August 2009

Big Spring Independent School District's “manhunt” is about over for another year, at least.

District trustees are expected to sign off on the latest round of teacher and staff hirings when they hold their  monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Filling vacancies in a teaching staff of around 300 keeps school administrators busy during the summer, but those efforts are about complete, Superintendent Steven Saldivar said.

“We're pretty much fully staffed now,” said Saldivar, adding that the district is still in need of a counselor and teacher/coach at the junior high, as well as a science teacher at the high school.

Saldivar expects the district to be fully staffed by the time the school year starts Aug. 24.

In other business, trustees will hear an update on construction projects they recently approved.

The projects — a renovation of the high school roof drainage system, resurfacing of the Blankenship Field track, emergency repairs to the archway at Marcy Elementary and construction of a modular addition to the administration building — are being financed by $3 million received from the Texas Education Agency as compensation for misfiguring past state aid.

The Marcy project is basically complete, while the modular addition to the administration building is expected to arrive today, Saldivar said. The other projects are still in the planning stage, although bids for the track resurfacing are expected to be opened Friday.

Total cost for the projects is expected to be $1.75 million, with the balance of the $3 million going into district reserve funds, officials said.

Also Thursday, trustees will consider:

• Agreements with Coahoma and Forsan ISDs to provide disciplinary alternative education services for those districts during the coming school year, as well as a similar agreement with Coahoma to provide construction technology instruction to CISD students this year.

“I view these agreements as all of us working together,” Saldivar said. “It's all Howard County and we all have the same goal — to provide good education for our kids. I look forward to having more collaborative efforts with Coahoma and Forsan in the future.”

• Approval of the teacher appraisal calendar.

• Superintendent performance goals.
