Ballgame, food, dance among Sands activities

By STEVE REAGAN

ACKERLY — It's homecoming weekend at Sands High School.

Current and former students will participate in a variety of activities as Sands celebrates its triennial homecoming starting tonight, officials said.

Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. today when students will whitewash the football field parking lot, followed by a “Meet the Mustangs” event sponsored by the booster club at the football field. At 7:30 p.m., everyone is invited to a community pep rally at the field.

Friday activities begin with a Drama Club-sponsored spaghetti supper at 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children 6 and under, said SHS' Tana Howard.

Prior to kickoff of the 7:30 p.m. homecoming game between Sands and Hermleigh, the school's Red Wagon Parade will be held at the football field track. Floats decorated by each grade will be featured, Howard said.

Sands' homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime of the football game. Queen nominees are:

• Freshman Jennifer Flores, escorted by Preston Gomez.

• Sophomore Nora Gomez, escorted by A.J. Hernandez.

• Junior Morgan Yabrough, escorted by Landon Parker.

• Senior Kim Wigington, escorted by Johnny Rogers.

Crown bearer and flower girl for the event will be Peyton Nichols and Savannah Avey.

After the game, the Sands Student Council is sponsoring a dance at the bus barn for students, their dates and exes. Cost is $3 for non-students.

Activities conclude Saturday when the junior class sponsors a homecoming meal for former students at noon in the school cafeteria. Cost of the brisket meal is $10, Howard said.

For more information, contact the school at 353-4888.
