By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer Citing health concerns during flu season, Scenic Mountain Medical Center officials are asking that children under 12 not visit the hospital.
The request is part of the hospital's precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses such as the flu to patients and others. Kim Howell, community director at the hospital, said the facility appreciates the supporting role visitors play in a patient's recovery. With an increase in seasonal flu, however, it would be best if families leave children at home, she added. “We're not going to have the visiting police out there,” Howell said. “Are we going to have armed guards posted at the elevators? No. But this is not the best time to be bringing the kids to the hospital.” This action is designed to help both children and patients, Chief Nursing Officer Judy Roever said. “Children are usually more active and generally have lower immunity, and they can potentially spread or catch infections,” Roever said. “Limiting visits by young children is a measure to protect children as well as our patients, other visitors and staff." In addition to small children, SMMC officials ask that adults and those over 12 who have fever, cough, sore throat or other respiratory symptoms not visit patients in the hospital. Howell added that there are several common-sense steps people can take to prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses, including: • Frequent washing of hands. • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. • Avoiding close contact with sick people. • Not touching your eyes, nose or mouth to phelp revent the spread of germs. • Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible.
