Crossroads Sports Alert
Anderson, Ritchey highlight all-district Steers
Tuesday, 01 December 2009

Herald Staff Report

After Hereford and Big Spring were eliminated from playoff contention Saturday, 18 Steers find themselves on the all-district list.

Monte Anderson and Matt Ritchey earned offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively, highlighting six players, five of them seniors, which earned first team honors. The list is formulated by votes from the district’s coaches.

“I was a little bit iffy on whether we would get either one of (the MVPs), but to get both of them is a real tribute to those kids and our team,” head coach Phillip Ritchey said.

Anderson, who went over 2,000 yards rushing on the season, was named first-team running back. Ritchey was a first-team linebacker and fullback, senior Steven Henry made the list as a defensive lineman, senior Pavel Plakhotny as an outside linebacker, senior Thaddeus Straughter at wide receiver and junior Jonathon Molina at guard.

“I didn’t really know going in how it was going to turn out,” Ritchey said. “I knew we definitely had some good candidates ... after it was over, overall I was pleased. I thought we did well.”

On the second team, junior tackle Tanner Henry made the list, Plakhotny was named at tight end and Ritchey, last year’s all-district punter, made the list again as a second-teamer at that spot. On defense, Micheal Menefield was named at safety, Devonte Lloyd at defensive end and Tyler Tannehill earned second team kicker honors.

Honorable mention players were junior Jackson Watkins, offensive line; junior Jacob Wylie, offensive line; senior Martiz Yanez, receiver and cornerback; senior Tevian Parnell, receiver and cornerback; senior Tannehill, quarterback; senior Xavian Parnell, outside linebacker; senior Derrick Anderson, defensive end; junior Dennis Merworth, safety; and senior Kyler McGee, defensive tackle.
