By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer Officials with Adult Protective Services and Western National Bank are asking area residents to lend a hand to the community's elderly and disabled this holiday season.
WNB and APS are joining forces in sponsoring the Giving Tree/Be A Star project, designed to provide gifts for APS clients. Trees at the bank's offices in Big Spring and Coahoma will contain paper ornaments with the names of elderly and disabled residents. Each ornament contains a wish list with items such as an electric blanket, bath robe, slippers or a baseball cap. “These items are all affordable and can make the difference between having Christmas or not for an elderly or disabled person,” an APS press release stated. “These people are neighbors and citizens of our community. Each is special and unique. They had meaningful lives and experiences and each deserve a moment of our time to make the holidays special.” More than 80 percent of all cases reported to APS involve neglect, according to information from the organization. Because of illness or diminished mental capacity, an elderly person may no longer be able to provide adequately for his or her own safety, officials said. The paper ornaments will be on the trees in Big Spring and Coahoma until Friday. Gifts may be returned unwrapped to any of the bank locations. The Christmas ornament will need to be returned with any items, so gifts may be matched to the correct individual.
