More than 550 children in the Crossroads area will wake up to a Christmas morning miracle, as the Big Spring Salvation Army distributed toys and other presents collected through the annual Angel Tree program Saturday morning.

The program, which allows area residents to “adopt” local angels and provide Christmas gifts for children and seniors in low-income families, wrapped up Saturday, as the gifts were handed out to parents and guardians who were approved for the program more than a month ago.

Ada Lafler, coordinator for the Angel Tree program, said it's a relief to know all of the children approved for the program will be receiving presents this holiday season.

“We had approximately 550 children and 50 seniors in the program this year, so it's a relief to have been able to accomplish so much,” said Lafler. “Of the 550 children, approximately 450 of them were adopted from the Angel Trees in the community, and the remaining 75 to 100 children will receive gifts donated to the program from local residents and civic groups.”

Lafler said this year's program likely suffered due to the downturn in the economy, but she's glad to see area residents did not let tough times darken local families hopes.

“We're very grateful for everyone who participated in the Angel Tree program,” said Lafler. “From the people who worked so hard to gather toys and other items to donate directly to the program, to the people who took angel cards from the trees and participated that way.

“I'm sure the problems with the economy took a toll on the program, but the people of Big Spring and Howard County are loving, caring people and they are always willing to pitch in when someone is in need. It's really something for the community to be proud of.”
