By THOMAS JENKINS Staff Writer Former Howard County Attorney Mike Thomas announced this week he will be vying for the 118th District Judge seat in 2010, setting up a contest on the Republican ticket during the March primaries.
Thomas is the second candidate to throw his political hat in the ring since longtime 118th District Judge Robert H. Moore III announced he would not seek re-election next year, as fellow Big Spring attorney Tim Yeats announced his candidacy in November. According to Thomas, the decision to run for the position came shortly after Moore announced he would not seek another term. “I had been considering the the position of district judge for some time,” said Thomas. “I made the decision to run after I found out Moore was not planning to run for re-election.” Thomas has been a lifelong resident of Howard County. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1974, attending the University of Texas and graduating with a degree in accounting in 1978. He then studied at the University of Houston, graduating in 1983 with a law degree. Having practiced law in Howard County for more than two decades, Thomas said he feels he has a superior grasp on legal matters in the Crossroads area. “I've been practicing law in Howard County for more than 20 years, and it has given me the opportunity to try many cases in this court,” said Thomas. “I feel that has given me the experience needed to serve as district judge. “It's a privilege to be a part of the judicial system and the 118th District. If elected, I plan to remember that it is my privilege to serve in that capacity, not my right. That my power comes from the people of Howard, Glasscock and Martin counties, and it would be an honor to serve as judge.” Thomas served as County Attorney until the position was won by local attorney Joshua Hamby in November 2008. Moore, who has overseen some of the most controversial cases in Howard County during his tenure, announced in November he would bring his more than 20-year run as district judge to a close next year. Thomas is expected to face Yeats in the Republican party primary slated for March 2010. Contact Staff Writer Thomas Jenkins at 263-7331 ext. 232 or by e-mail at
