By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer Monday is the first day candidates may file for upcoming area school board races.
Candidates for board elections at Howard College and school districts in Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton and Sands can file for their respective races through March 8, school officials said. Trustee elections will be held May 10. Big Spring Independent School District voters will elect three trustees this year. Single-member seats currently held by Mike Dawson (District 5), Jeff Brorman (District 6) and Phil Furqueron (District 7) will be contested, said Debbie Green, BSISD business manager. All three positions are for three years. Dawson recently announced he is stepping down after 12 years on the board, while both Brorman and Furqueron said they intend to seek new terms. Prospective candidates must be at least 18 years of age, registered voters and Texas residents and must have resided in the district they wish to represent for at least six months, Green said. Interested persons may file their candidacies at the BSISD business office during normal office hours through March 8, Green added. At-large seats currently held by James White and Sissy Franklin will be up for election at Coahoma ISD, said Judy Dobbs, administration secretary.
