School board electioneering to start
By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer School board election season is about to begin.
Persons interested in running in local college or school district board elections set for May 10 can do so beginning Monday Candidates for board elections at Howard College and school districts in Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton and Sands can file for their respective races until March 8, school officials said. Howard College and Big Spring and Stanton school districts will elect trustees to single-member districts, meaning that only voters within a certain district can elect those representatives. Coahoma, Forsan and Sands will elect at-large trustees who will represent the entire district. Big Spring Independent School District voters will elect three trustees this year. Seats currently held by Mike Dawson (District 5), Jeff Brorman (District 6) and Phil Furqueron (District 7) will be contested, said Debbie Green, BSISD business manager. All three positions are for three years. Dawson, currently the president of the BSISD board, has said he will not seek a fifth term on the board, while both Brorman and Furqueron said they intend to seek re-election. Furqueron has been a BSISD board member for nine years, while Brorman is completing his first term as a school trustee. Prospective candidates must be at least 18 years of age, registered voters and Texas residents and must have resided in the district they wish to represent for at least six months, Green said. Interested persons may file their candidacies at the BSISD business office during normal office hours, Green added. At-large seats currently held by James White and Sissy Franklin will be up for election at Coahoma ISD, said Judy Dobbs, administration secretary. Persons interested in running for the three-year posts can do so at the CISD administration building. Forsan ISD has two position up for election this year — at-large posts currently held by Tom Bill Kuykendall and Chris Evans. Candidates may file papers at the superintendent's office in Forsan between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., said Judy Park, superintendent's secretary. Sands CISD voters also will elect two trustees this year. Three-year, at-large seats currently held by Stan Blagrave and Michelle Zant will be decided. Candidates may file at the superintendent's office during normal office hours, Superintendent Wayne Blount said. Two single-member positions are up for election at Stanton ISD. Three-year terms in District 1 (currently held by Daniel Ramos) and District 5 (Darren Patrick is the incumbent) will be decided. Candidacy papers can be filed in the superintendent's office. Four trustee positions are up for election this year at Howard College. Six-year terms in Precinct 1 (currently held by Michael Flores) and Precinct 2 (where Murray Murphy is the incumbent) will be decided. In addition, special elections to fill unexpired terms will be held in Precinct 3 and 4. Those positions, currently held by Larry McLellan and Maxwell Barr, respectively, are for two years. Candidates may file their papers in the president's temporary office in Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, said Judy Bailey, secretary to the college president.
