Landfill wells on council agenda
By THOMAS JENKINS Staff Writer The agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting of the Big Spring City Council consists of mostly routine items, including the addition of new water monitor wells at the municipal landfill.
According to Assistant City Manager Todd Darden, the facility currently has 12 wells used to monitor possible contamination of underground water, and thanks to new requirements from the state, will be getting four more. “The wells that we have out there have been there for about 30 years or so,” said Darden. “And to my knowledge, we’ve never had a situation where there has been any contamination from the landfill. However, the state has changed its requirements, so we’ll have to put in four more wells to be in compliance.” Darden said water from the wells is tested twice each year by an independent lab for contaminants from the landfill. “It’s something you certainly have to stay on top of,” said Darden, “but adding the wells is pretty simple. We want to make sure we do everything we can to stay in compliance with state regulations, so it’s a pretty easy fix.” Also on Tuesday’s agenda, the council will consider: • Final reading of an ordinance that will increase the city’s general fund budget to provide for new computer software for the Big Spring Police Department. • Award a bid for sludge removal at the city’s water treatment plant. • Award a bid for installation of the groundwater monitoring wells at the landfill. • A presentation and update on the 2010 Census. • A resolution changing the first council meeting in March from March 9 to March 8. • Approval of a contract between the city and the National Development Council for economic development services. • Approval of a temporary 90-day agreement with Cigna Behavioral Health Inc. to provide life and disability insurance policies for the municipality. The meeting will get under way at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth Street. Contact Staff Writer Thomas Jenkins at 263-7331 ext. 232 or by e-mail at
