However, there’s a catch.
Steelman, an Eagle Scout with Troop 16 in Forsan, was recently selected to attend the 2010 National Scout Jamboree, which will be held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia this July.
“It’s a great honor. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America,” said Steelman, who’s been in scouting for 11 years. “I’ve been trying to qualify for the trip for the past six months and I only found out (about the selection) a week ago.”
The catch?
The trip will be anything but cheap — Steelman said it will cost him $3,000 to attend the affair.
Aside from being an Eagle Scout and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 16, Steelman also has made his mark in the classroom. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Howard College, where he is majoring in computer science.
Steelman, the son of K.W. and Leslie Imler, said his time as a Scout has been invaluable.
“Scouting has taught me so much — how to live off the land, how to help others and just how to be a better person,” he said. “It’s been a big part of my life and probably always will be.”
In addition to his regular scouting duties, he has served on staff at Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch for two summers and two winter camps.
Steelman and his family are working overtime to raise the money, but he admitted he needs the public’s help to make the trip.
“Donations will not go to waste. I will be grateful of any donation that I can get,” he said. “Jamboree is expensive but it will leave me with a lifetime of memories.” An account has been established in Steelman’s name at Big Spring Community Federal Credit Union on FM 700.
