Sam Houston State hires veteran coach |

HUNTSVILLE, (AP) - Mark Johnson, who led Texas A&M to two College WorldSeries appearances, was hired Thursday as Sam Houston State¹s head baseballcoach.
Johnson was fired last year as coach of the Aggies after the teamfinished second to last in the Big 12 with a 30-25-1 record. Johnson had a record of 876-433-3 over two decades with Texas A&M,leading the team to the College World Series in 1993 and 1999 and to 13 NCAA playoff appearances. "Obviously, I¹m excited to get back into coaching with this opportunity at Sam Houston State University," Johnson said in a statement. "When I visited Sam Houston during the interview I was very impressed with the people and the university. They share my vision, and it¹s going to be a great fit." Johnson played professional baseball with the Mets from 1967-69 and before joining the Aggies was an assistant coach at New Mexico, Arizona and Mississippi State. |
