Mustangs ready for Roundup in Ackerly
Thursday, 20 September 2007

By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer
ACKERLY — It’s not homecoming — it’s Roundup.
Sands High School’s alternative to its once-every-three-years homecoming is being celebrated this week with a variety of events leading up to Friday’s clash between the Mustangs and the visiting Loop Longhorns.

“Every three years, we have a big homecoming celebration ... and we plan a lot of activities for the exes,” Sands Principal Zelda Bilbo said. “In between, we have Roundup.”

One of the biggest highlights of any Roundup is the crowning of the queen prior to Friday’s game. As in past years, each SHS class nominated a queen candidate. They are:

• Senior class nominee is Melony Ruiz, daughter of Chris Ruiz Sr. and Mr.  and Mrs. Jimmy Anderson. She will be escorted by Thomas Pena, son of Janie Pena and Donald Pena.

• Junior class nominee is Brittni Blagrave, daughter of Stan and Carla Blagrave. She will be escorted by Seth Fry, son of Randy and Leigh Ann Fry.

• Sophomore class nominee is Kimberly Wigington, daughter of Bobby and Carla Wigington, who will be escorted by Reuben McMorris, son of Ray and Amy McMorris.

• Freshman class nominee is Meagan Yarbrough, daughter of Monica and Tommy Staggs and Mark and Tiffany Yarbrough. She will be escorted by Landon Parker, son of Steve and Amy Parker.

Sands students have marked Roundup Week with a variety of “dress-up days” at the school, ranging from patriotic red, white and blue garb on Monday, pajamas on Tuesday and dressing as historical characters today.

On game day Friday, Bilbo said the school’s drama club will host a spaghetti supper from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Cost is $6 for adults.

The Roundup Queen will be crowned at 7 p.m., with the game between Sands and Loop beginning at 7:30 p.m.

For more information, contact the school at 353-4888.

My family has lived in Big Spring for 31 years. This last Thursday my mother, Geri York and I had to go out of town for some doctors appts. We stopped at the very last gas station as you leave town heading to Midland. I think it is a Shell Sation. We had to get a gallon of water to add to my truck. We purchased the water and before we could even get it into the truck we had two seperate men ask if we needed any help. This is the reason we live in Big Spring and West Texas!!

The greed of the people in Big Spring has become unbelievable since shortly after the refinery explosion! Now that there is an influx of out-of-towners the supply and demand of housing is being strained. Rent has suddenly doubled (or more) and "trailer parks" are popping up all over to help accomodate. All these good ol' boys are lining their pockets on opportunity presented by tragedy and it makes me sick. Not only are they raping the newcomers for their money, but those of us who have lived here for years haven't suddenly come into a lot of money. We still work regular jobs with regular pay. Now we can't even afford to live in our own town because of the greed of all these opportunists!
