Family of the Year is a designation Baylor and Jamie Walker of Garden City never expected to receive, but they are honored, none the less.
The Walkers have been named the Samaritan Counseling Center of West Texas Family of the Year for this area.
âWe can think of many other families in Howard and Glasscock counties that are much more deserving,â Jamie Walker said.
The Walkers have three children, Shawn, Lyndee and Mason. The family has been a part of the Garden City community for 12 years as well as members of First Presbyterian Church.
âWe are simply trying our best to raise three children and make the right decisions,â Walker said. âSometimes we do well and sometimes we fail, just like any other family.â
Patty Pisklak, development director of Samaritan Counseling Center, said families are nominated by someone in their community. Nominations are based on commitment to each other, community service and their faith.
âThe Walkers were recognized because they are very active in the community, in the church and they are obviously very committed to each other,â Pisklak said.
The family will be recognized with three other families â Jim and Tammy Smitherman of Midland, Dr. Griffin and Donna Jones of Odessa and Boby and Joyce Zap of Andrews â during a 6 p.m. banquet Thursday at Green Tree Country Club in Midland. Abby Rike, 2009 Biggest Loser contestant, will be the guest speaker.
âWe are by no means a perfect family, but is there really such a thing?â Walker said. âWe do feel very honored, but undeserving at the same time.â
Samaritan Counseling Center of West Texas is a non-profit Counseling Center that provides faith-based, professional counseling services, promotes healing and wholeness and complements the ministry of the religious community.
Pisklak said funds raised at the banquet will provide financial aid to low-income men, women and children who come to our Center for psychological counseling and/or spiritual direction.
