Warrant issued in gun death

October 30, 2012

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Big Spring man believed to have been involved in the shooting death of a 33-year-old man early Saturday morning.

According to investigators with the Howard County Sheriff's Office, an arrest warrant on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon has been issued for 19-year-old Chris Daniel Marquez of Big Spring.

The warrant was issued by Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman, according to a press release issued Monday morning by Sheriff Stan Parker.

“More charges are expected as the case continues to develop,” Parker said Monday.

Marquez is described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 130 pounds.

Monday's arrest warrant isn't Marquez's first brush with the law, as the Big Spring teen was arrested in 2010 on a charge of theft – more than $1,500 and less than $20,000 and in 2011 on charges of possession of a controlled substance — a misdemeanor charge — theft of a firearm and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

According to court records, Marquez received deferred adjudication for the theft charge in 2011, however, in September 2011 he faced a motion to adjudicate on the same charge. Marquez would go on to serve 14 months in state prison for the theft charge.

Luis Adolfo Pena, 33, was pronounced dead at Scenic Mountain Medical Center shortly after 2:30 a.m. Saturday from what investigators say appeared to be a gunshot wound.

According to Parker, HCSO deputies were dispatched to a location on Driver Road at approximately 2:33 a.m. Saturday in reference to a possible shooting.

“Deputies were dispatched to 500 Driver Road, which is the old VFW building,” Parker said. “Upon arrival, deputies found Pena in the parking lot suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Pena was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center by emergency medical services, where he was later pronounced dead.”

Also injured in the altercation was Raul Mendez, 33, who was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center by private vehicle, according to Parker. Mendez was treated for his wounds at the emergency room and later released.

Anyone with information on the location of Marquez is being asked to contact the HCSO at 432-264-2244 or Crimestoppers at 263-TIPS (8477). Tips can be made to Crimestoppers anonymously, no caller ID is ever used and tipsters could receive a reward of up to $1,000.
