Water main break cancels out classes

January 18, 2012

No school, but this time it wasn't because of ice and snow.

A 20-inch main water break, which occurred Tuesday night on the north side of the Big Spring High School campus, caused the Big Spring Independent School District and Howard College campus to cancel classes for the day.

“We discovered the issue about 6:30 this morning when a parent called, which caused us to discover the break,” Director of Maintenance and Transportation at BSISD Wayland Pierce said.

According to Pierce, the line that broke feeds water to the high school, junior high, and the entire north side of Big Spring as well as Sand Springs and Coahoma.

“We have contingency plans for when one campus is effected, but when it comes to more than one campus being effected there isn't much we can do.”
The decision to close the BSISD schools for the day was contributed to sanitation reasons, according to Pierce.

“Another thing we had to consider was, what if the problem worsened and we had no water?” Pierce said.

Howard College made the same decision after discovering low water pressure on campus.

“We made the decision about 7:30 this morning. It just seemed appropriate to cancel classes and not have people here on campus when we had no water,” Cindy Smith, director of information at Howard College, said.

According to Smith and Pierce, classes at Howard College and BSISD campuses should be back to normal Thursday.

“We are working with the city to get the repairs made,” Pierce said.
According to officials at the YMCA the facility will be closed in the afternoon today because there is no water available at the building.
