W.C. 'Curley' Hayes

December 30, 2011

W.C. “Curley” Hayes, 91, of Cleburne passed away Dec. 24, 2011, following a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 27, 1920, in Linden, Texas, to Ira and Lois Hayes, Curley had three sisters, Bertha, Oleta and Oneta and two brothers, Joe and Doyle. He wed Rita Duren in Big Spring, Texas, on Aug. 4, 1943.

He spent the early years of his life working in the oil fields of West Texas as a truck driver, becoming the supervisor/dispatcher for H.W. Smith Transport in Big Spring for a number of years. In 1966 he and Rita relocated to Cleburne and he started his own business, Hayes Sand and Gravel, which he operated until retirement. He served a number of years as head deacon of the Cleburne First Seventh-day Adventist Church where he was a long-time member.

Curley had a good sense of humor and was always ready with a funny story to bring a laugh. He liked watching the Dallas Cowboys on TV and helping the good guys win in old westerns. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He often nicknamed folks he spent time with, sometimes forgetting what their real names were. He played harmonica and guitar entertaining us with his renditions of old favorites.

Curley is survived by Rita, his wife of 68 years; daughter, Toni and husband Eddie Owen; grandchildren, Kimberlie and husband Joe Currier, Jason Owen, Rebecca and Bobby Ray Hayes; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Jerod Currier, Mead, Connor and Colin Owen; step-grandchild, Joy Currier; sister, Oleta Stone; and brothers, Joe and wife Barbara Hayes and Doyle Hayes; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and a special black Lab, Molly. He was predeceased by his parents; son, Douglas Hayes; and two sisters, Bertha Hayes and Oneta Hagood.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Crosier Pearson Cleburne Funeral Chapel in Cleburne with Tony Torres, senior pastor of Cleburne First Seventh-day Adventist Church, officiating, assisted by Pastor Peter Duricheck and Pastor Harly Charles. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will follow Keene Cemetery, Keene, Texas. Crosier Pearson Cleburne Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thank you to the staff at Freedom Hospice, Ridgeview Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital.
