Webb AFB remembered at reunion

October 10, 2011

Webb Air Force Base may be closed but its memories are still alive.
Pilots, instructors and many others who at one time called the air base home gathered together for the 2011 Webb Reunion.

David Blubaugh, a former instructor pilot and one of the last to be stationed at Webb before it closed in 1977, was one of the many who came for this year's reunion.

"We have been back a few times, but we noticed a few people we haven't seen in a while would be attending, and we decided it would be nice to see them," Blubaugh said.

This year's reunion began Friday with a luncheon and air show by Jan Collimer. Saturday attendees had the option of attending the CAF air show in Midland or touring different places in Big Spring.

"This is a good chance to see good friends you don't get to see that often," former instructor pilot Bill Thompson aid.

He continued, "It is hard to explain to someone, because these guys are younger and older than me but yet we all have something in common. It's not like your high school reunion where you go and don't have much to talk about because you don't have anything in common ... here we all have something in common, that includes the spouses."

The reunion concluded Sunday morning with a farewell breakfast at Hangar 25.

"It was a great experience being able to see old friends and even meeting new ones," Blubaugh said.
