Webb to highlight symphony performance

January 21, 2013

Dr. Charles Webb, one of the most highly admired pianists, performers and judges in the musical world — and a former Big Spring resident, to boot — will highlight “Classic Wonders,” another in the 2012-2013 season series of the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra.
The performance is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Big Spring Municipal Auditorium, under the direction of Dr. Keith Graumann. Tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for seniors and $8 for students.
Named a “Living Legend” by Indiana University, Dr. Webb is highly respected as a conductor, pianist and organist. He received his bachelor of arts and master of music degrees from Southern Methodist University and in 1964, received his doctorate from Indiana
He was appointed conductor to the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir in 1967.
Webb retired from the Indiana University faculty in 1997 after serving as dean of the School of Music for 24 years. During that time, the School was named No. 1 in quality in three independent national surveys.
He was recipient of the Thomas Hart Benton Medal from Indiana University in June of 1987 and the President's Medal in December, 2000. He also received three "Sagamore of the Wabash" awards from three Indiana governors, the highest award the state gives for meritorious service.
In addition to his performances, he has served as a judge for international music competition on several continents, including the Liszt-Bartok Competition in Hungary, the Busoni Competition in Italy, and the Munich Competition, as well as the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris and the Carl Flesch Competition in London.
Among the pieces to be performed during the Feb. 2 concert are Rimsky Korsakov: Procession of Nobles, Lutoslawski: Paganini Variations and Dvorak: Symphony No. 9.
Tickets are available at Blum's Jewelers, Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, Heritage Museum and at the door. The concert is open seating, first-come, first-serve.
