We're not telling you what to do

December 2, 2010

This space, at this time of year, is commonly used to hype the season and spout on and on about how wonderful this community is and how well (and often) it expresses the holiday spirit.

Often, we encourage your participation in the many charitable fund-raisers that provide gifts for children, food for the needy and warmer clothing for the coatless.

We remind you, as if you didn’t know, that you can pick an angel from a tree, drop a few bucks in a black pot or stuff a shoe box full of toys — no knives or guns, please.

Often, we warn you not to do something stupid like set your house on fire, leave your doors unlocked, put brightly colored Christmas packages in the front seat with the windows down or drive after you’ve had too many eggnogs. We say it every year. If you are still doing those things, you probably deserve lumps of coal in your stocking.

We always encourage you to shop Big Spring and support local merchants.

And while we will always repeat all of these things more times than you, dear reader, would like, today we’re not going to. That’s right, even though it is just hours before the Herald Lighted Community Christmas Parade, the First United Methodist Church Living Christmas Tree, Heritage Museum’s Christmas Tree Forest and Canterbury’s bazzar, we’re staying mum.

Go if you want. Don’t if you don’t. You don’t need us to tell you what to do. We are not your Mama. Aren’t you glad? Now get off your duff and do it. Make your own happiness.

Oh, and don’t forget. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

We’ll see you there.
