Wigington named interim superintendent

August 27, 2013

Big Spring Independent School District trustees didn't have to look far to find an interim superintendent.

Trustees emerged from a 90-minute closed session Monday to name Chris Wigington, the district's director of student services, to temporarily replace former Superintendent Steven Saldivar.

Wigington was selected from among four candidates for the position, including BSISD Assistant Superintendent Danny Ferrell and Executive Director for Personnel and Instruction Ann McClarty.

His appointment was approved by a 6-1 vote from the board — the lone dissenter was trustee Pat DeAnda.
“Chris, I just wanted you to know my vote wasn't against you personally,” DeAnda said after the selection was made. “I just thought we needed to go in a different direction.”

Wigington has 24 years experience in the education field, the last 10 years as an administrator. He taught and coached at Tahoka, Snyder, Merkel and Sweetwater before becoming assistant principal of Sweetwater High School in 2003. He later served as high school principal there before coming to Big Spring as secondary curriculum specialist four years ago.

He was named director of student services earlier this year.
