Yard sale nets $700 for firefighters

$714 raised for volunteer fire department

Sometimes cleaning out the closest can be a good thing.
Crossroads residents joined together Saturday morning — July 30 — at the Community Wide Yard Sale held in the Big Spring Herald parking lot in support of the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department. Eleven vendors set up in the north parking lot from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Through their efforts, $714 was raised.
There were garage sale items, arts and crafts and more. Members of the volunteer fire department were also on hand during the event.
“We really appreciate all the community support,” Gary Snowden, volunteer firefighter, said. “The support has been really good and most of us wouldn’t be able to push the way we do if it wasn’t for the support.”
Each vendor paid a $10 entry fee to participate in the yard sale and set up donations jars at their booths. Monies raised through entry fees and donation jars went to the local volunteer fire department.
“Knowing people are behind us and supporting us really keeps us going,” Billy Waid, volunteer firefighter, said. “They may not be out there with us in the fires, but knowing they stand behind us with their support really does help.”
This season has been an unusual and busy one for Texas firefighters and with little to no rain in the forecast there is still a high rate of fire danger. The short rain received Friday afternoon in the city didn’t do much for the drought conditions. Residents are urged to adhere to the fire ban and water restrictions as the drought continues.
