Year-long art project on display at Howard College

March 4, 2013

Most of us would have a difficult time performing a major task every day, without fail, for a year, much less complete a painting.
For Stacy Slaten, however, producing 365 paintings in a year was more than just a chore, it was equal parts art project and teaching tool.
Slaten's work will be on display for a month beginning today at Howard College's Hall Center for the Arts. An opening reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Slaten, the art director at Howard, said she was looking around for a project when she came up with the paining-a-day project.
“I got the idea from an artist who did something similar with sculptures,” she said. “I thought it would be an interesting project … and a good teaching tool, also.”
She started the project on Feb. 14, 2012 and immediately recognized how much work would be involved.
“On the second day, I almost quit,” she laughed. “After that, I was OK, but on that second day, I was like, 'I can't do this. Forget about it.'”
The project, Slaten said, became a way for her to recall notable events during the year.
“It sort of became a visual diary for me,” she said. “My nephew was born, a friend of mine was married, my grandfather died … There are a lot of personal memories reflected in this project.”
