Young anglers to cast their lines Friday

Area youth will have the chance to drown a few worms — and win prizes — Saturday, as the Greater Big Spring Rotary Club presents its fifth annual Fishing Contest for Boys and Girls.

Slated for 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Comanche Trail Lake, the competition is open to youth 17 years and younger, according to event coordinator Ken McIntosh.

“Registration for the event will begin at noon with a number of door prizes to be awarded starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Dora Roberts Community Center,” McIntosh said. “The kids really enjoy the tournament. It gives them a chance to show off their angling skills, but it also gets them out in the fresh air and sun for a little while.”

Anglers taking part in the competition will be setting their sights on rainbow trout, a variety which should prove plentiful thanks to prior planning, according to McIntosh.

“The Comanche Trail Park Lake has been stocked with nearly 5,000 trout this season,” he said. “In addition to door prizes, children and youth will have the chance to win featured prizes based on the categories of first fish caught, largest fish caught and most caught by the 4 p.m. deadline.

“Popular ways to catch trout include fishing off the bottom of the lake with corn, salmon eggs or a variety of power baits. Small Rooster Tail and Super Duper lures work well, too, given the time of day, weather and water conditions.”

There is no admission fee for the contest, which offers local families a great way to enjoy the outdoors and time together, according to McIntosh.
“Life can get so busy with work and everything else going on that we forget to stop and look around us and be thankful for the special things we have in our lives,” McIntosh said. “This fishing contest gives area children a chance to get outdoors and enjoy some time with their family while they fish.”
