Although the official collection week is still a week away, shoeboxes are already coming into the collection site for the annual Operation Christmas Child, according to local organizer Allan Johnson.
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. The idea is for volunteers to pack a shoebox with items from toothbrushes to small stuffed animals to be delivered to more than 124 million children worldwide for Christmas.
During the 2014 drive, Johnson said 1,500 boxes were collected from this area, which includes Howard, Mitchell and Dawson counties alone.
The official collection week is Nov. 16-23 and boxes can be dropped off at Allan’s Furniture,
202 Scurry Street, Big Spring, during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 16-20; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23.
