Marcelo L. Torres, 93, of Abilene, formerly of Coahoma, died Thursday Jan. 9, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services with military honors will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born to Gavina and Narciso Torres in Seguin, Texas, on Oct. 30, 1920. He was a lifetime resident of Howard County until 2006. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of the United States Marines serving in WWII. After the military, he started working with Texas & Pacific Railroad and after 36 years retired from Union Pacific Railroad. He was also avid golfer and at the age of 81 got a hole in one at Comanche Trail Golf Course.
He is survived by four daughters: Tomasa Torres of Abilene, Guadalupe Arroyo and her husband Adolfo of Hawley, Isabel Miller of Abilene and Terri Hodnett and husband Lyle of Pottsboro, Texas; four sons: Willie Torres of Abilene, Marcelo Torres Jr. and wife Terry of El Paso, Tony Torres and wife Diane of Winters and Oscar Torres and wife Donna, also of Winters; one sister, Frances Torres of Coahoma; one brother, Savas Torres of Coahoma; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Paula Torres in 1994; one son David Torres, one daughter Maria Torres; and two brothers: Santos and Raymond Torres, who were also WWII veterans.
