The Big Spring boys’ golf team is on the right path early this spring season.
The Steers are reveling in their first-place finish at the Big Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Big Spring Country Club. The Steers shot a 622 as a team, with Blake Brorman’s 146 being the lowest score on the team.
It’s the first tournament win for Big Spring golf — boys or girls — since 2004.
“It’s a good confidence builder, finally getting a team win under our belt,” Brorman said. “It’s a big deal and I think it’s going to play later on down the road knowing we can actually win one.”
The big deal here, besides the fact it was a tournament win, is the number of opponents in the Invitational the Steers will see again later this season.
Snyder, Abilene Wylie and Sweetwater — all district foes — were in this tournament. Snyder and Wylie weren’t too far behind Big Spring with a 639 and 640, respectively, good for third and fourth.
Andrew Fillingim was big, too, with a 149. He said this win gives the Steers confidence they can play with anybody in the district and it gives this team hope for regionals.
The Steers will be in Plainview this weekend for a tournament.
Fillingim said the key for to playing well for the rest of the season is simply for the Steers to enjoy themselves.
“I think it’s just having fun,” he said. “When you’re stressed out, it gets worse, but when you start having fun, it wrks your way more often.”
