ODESSA — Forsan High School's Kyle Stevenson and Sydney Holdampf are one win away from a trip to the state tennis tournament.
Stevenson and Holdampf, both juniors at FHS, each recorded two victories Wednesday to reach the boys' and girls' singles semifinal round, respectively, at the Region I-2A tennis tournament at Ratliff Stadium Tennis Complex.
Stevenson opened tournament play be defeating Cody Asbury of Ingram Tom Moore, 6-3, 6-1. He then knocked off Ricardo Chavez of Dimmitt, 6-0, 6-0 to reach the semifinals, where he'll face Jesse Guerra of Tornillo at 8:30 a.m. today.
A win over Guerra will put Stevenson in the singles championship match against either Tyson Turnbow of Muleshoe or Stefan Wilson of Ozona and guarantee him a spot in the University Interscholastic League state tennis tournament next month (the top two finishers qualify for the state meet).
Holdampf opened girls' singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Jessica Pinon of Spearman, then bested Evelyn Godinez of Tornillo, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinal round. She faced Lauren Zackett of Comfort in the semifinals.
If he qualifies, it will mark Stevenson's second straight trip to the state tournament, while Holdampf is seeking her first berth at the state meet.
