LUBBOCK — Coach Jason Phillips was disappointed his Buffaloes weren’t moving on the playoffs after Friday’s 6-2 loss to Bushland but he certainly wasn’t disappointed in his players.
“We played two solid games against last year’s state finalist. Bushland is a great 2A baseball team and our guys went out and proved that we could play with them,” Coach Phillips said. “It’s disappointing to lose, but we had a great year. I’m proud of our guys.”
Bushland had defeated Forsan 5-2 in Game 1 of the best-of-three series Thursday at Lubbock Cooper’s Pirate Field. Friday’s loss put the Buffs out of the playoffs while Bushland, 22-7, will advance to play either Lubbock Roosevelt or Idalou in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Bushland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to lead 5-0. Forsan had a run in the bottom of the fifth and got its final run in the seventh.
Dylan Lowery and Foster Burchett had two hits each. Zane Herrin scored both runs for the Buffaloes, who finished the season at 20-8. Payton Paker pitched the entire game for Forsan, striking out four batters and giving up just three earned runs.
“We have great expectations for next season,” Phillips said. “We lose two seniors in Dylan Lowery and Zane Herrin. Those two guys will be missed.”
