No one likes being labeled “unacceptable,” and that applies to school districts as well as individuals.
Big Spring Independent School District has been saddled with an “academically unacceptable” rating ever since the Texas Education Agency school accountability ratings were released July 29. Thursday, school officials briefed trustees on how they intend to shed that label.
The reason BSISD received the “unacceptable” tag from TEA was student scores on the science and math portions of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. Scores in those test areas from minority and economically disadvantaged students were below the cutoff level to earn an “academically acceptable” rating, officials said.
“TEA evaluated us in 24 (demographic areas),” BSISD Superintendent Steven Saldivar told trustees. “And in seven of those areas, we were unacceptable.”
