Christmastime has arrived at the museum.
Caboose Water Color Society members will be presenting their works in an art reception at Heritage Museum as part of an open house from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m Sunday. Area residents will be able to view art depictions of old storefront windows produced by members of the Society’s six artists and also see the opening of the Christmas Tree Forest.
“The museum’s focus on bygone days of Big Spring is what sparked interest in the town itself,” artist Kay Smith said. “A glimpse into the children’s lives is possible with our colorful and vibrant works showing the toys in that era.”
Both exhibits will be open and viewable by the public Sunday through Dec. 21. Admission to the Christmas Tree Forest — featured throughout the museum — will be $2 for adults and $1 for children and seniors.
Members of the museum receive free admission.
“This is our biggest year yet and we are so excited,” museum director Nancy Raney said. “Everyone who decorated a tree has really outdone themselves this year.”
The forest includes 50 trees, placed throughout the upstairs and downstairs, decorated by area individuals, businesses and organizations.
Another first this year is the inclusion of the gift shop in the Christmas Tree Forest, according to Raney. There is new jewelry, purses, Christmas ornaments and other hard to find kid-gifts.
“We want to be the ultimate one-stop Christmas shop. This way you don’t have to go out of Big Spring to shop; you can come into the museum and find what you are looking for,” Raney said.
Paintings in the Caboose Water Color Soceity show are also for sale. According to Smith, a portion of the proceeds from the paintings will go to the museum.
“We truly appreciate all the support from the citizens of Big Spring and surrounding area have given and continue to give towards our artwork and our fantastic museum,” Smith said.
Heritage Museum is located at 510 Scurry St. Museum hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday.
