Oliver Cofer Jr., 87, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, in Fort Worth, Texas. He had resided in Big Spring from 1948 to 2001.
Oliver was born Oct. 7, 1924, to Janie and Oliver Cofer Sr. in Grand Saline, Texas. He graduated from Grand Saline High School in 1942. He studied journalism at North Texas State University in Denton.
Oliver took a job at the Alvin Sun newspaper as the youngest editor in Texas in 1946. He then accepted a job as circulation manager of the Terrell Tribune from 1947-1948. He came to work for the Big Spring Herald in 1948 and worked as advertising director until his retirement in 1981.
Oliver dedicated many years to his community. He was active in the Jaycees, Elks Lodge, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Rotary Club and served as a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. In his professional field, Oliver served as president of the Texas Newspaper Advertising Manager’s Association. He also taught courses at Howard College in the mid-1950s.
Oliver married his college sweetheart, Bonnie Marie Burleson in March 1946. They just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Vicki and husband Wade Trostle of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Steve Cofer and wife Dana of Hurst. They have two grandchildren, David of Maumelle, Ark., and Katherine Trostle of North Richland Hills, Texas. Oliver and Bonnie relocated to North Richland Hills in November 2001 to be near their children.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Heart Association.
Graveside services will be held at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011.
