Albert “Tomate” Mendoza, 67, of Big Spring died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Deacon Johnny Arguello officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Albert was born May 22, 1944, in Big Spring to Esperanza and William Mendoza Sr. He grew up in Big Spring. Albert played baseball for the Big Spring Steers and later played semi-professional for the Big Spring Tigers and the Big Spring Cardinals. Albert traveled throughout the United States.
He settled in Dallas in the late 1970s and returned to Big Spring in November 2010. In addition to his love of baseball and all sports, Albert loved music, especially Elvis Presley, and was an Elvis impersonator. He was a Catholic.
Albert is survived by his mother, Esperanza “Hope” Mendoza of Big Spring; three brothers, Charlie Mendoza and his wife Beckie, Victor Mendoza and wife Yolanda and Larry Mendoza and wife Pat, all of Big Spring; three sisters, Lesvia Gamboa of Ft. Worth, Olga Billalba and husband Tommy and Rosanna Everett, both from Big Spring; five aunts, Isabel (Libby) Uribe, Anita Valles, Alicia Fierro, Elma Flores and Celia Franco; four uncles, David Holguin, Frank Mendoza, Carlos Mendoza and Raul Mendoza; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his cats, Whitey Cat and Old Yeller.
Albert was preceded in death by his father, William S. Mendoza Sr. on May 18, 2000; and one brother, Willie Mendoza Jr. on Jan. 4, 2007.
Pallbearers will be Billy Pineda, Jody Flores, Andrew J. Gamboa, Tommy Billalba Jr., Mikey Mendoza and Gabriel Mendoza.
Honorary pallbearers will be former team mates of the Big Spring Tigers and the Big Spring Cardinals.
