Howard College officials are taking their time to find a new provost at SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf.
The position became vacant when Dr. Mark Myers announced his resignation earlier this year, and officials said no timetable has been set in naming a replacement.
Howard College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said the search will continue “as long as it takes” to find a suitable replacement for Myers.
Myers announced his resignation in January and intends to relocate closer to family members, Sparks said.
Myers, a New England native, accepted the SWCID position in 2008, succeeding long-time provost Dr. Ron Brasel.
Until a new provost is found, former SWCID Dean Dominick “Dom” Bonura is serving as interim provost.
Bonura has a long-time association with SWCID, having served the campus as the dean of students from 1981-1986 and has worked with the SWCID Advisory Board for more than nine years and is currently the group’s chairman.
He holds two master’s degrees, one in special education from Keene State University in New Hampshire and one in administration from California State University in Northridge, Calif.
After leaving his original stint with SWCID, Bonura went on to serve as the assistant headmaster at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia for six years.
