The Big Spring Police Department is investigating an altercation at the Big Spring Mall Sunday evening that claimed the life of a 22-year-old local man.
Noe Sanchez, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene by Howard County Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman, according to law enforcement officials, after being struck by a vehicle.
Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the BSPD, said officers were dispatched to the Big Spring Mall parking lot — near the Family Dollar entrance — at approximately 6:40 p.m. in reference to a report of shots fired.
“Officers arrived (on the scene) within one minute and discovered one man down and a large crowd of people gathered around,” Everett said. “At that point, officers learned there had been a disturbance involving several subjects. A fight had started, at which time one of the subjects produced a handgun and shots were fired.”
Everett said details are still coming together for investigators, but at some point in the melee Sanchez was hit and killed by a car.
“No one was hit by the gunfire,” Everett said. “At this point, details are scarce as to who was driving the vehicle (that struck Sanchez) and who fired the shots.”
Everett said investigators are working to identify both the vehicle used to strike Sanchez and the driver.
“We're in the process of interviewing the witnesses. There are quite a few of them,” Everett said. “We have some good eyewitness accounts of what happened. This isn't one of those situations where everyone who was there tells investigators they didn't see anything. We're confident we'll be able to identify the driver of the vehicle.”
Although the vehicle used to strike Sanchez was hit by gunfire, according to Everett, no other injuries were reported.
Everett declined to comment on the make or model of vehicle used in the incident or the description of the person believed to be at the wheel at the time of Sanchez's death.
