An early morning accident Saturday near Coahoma claimed the life of one person and sent two others to the hospital.
According to Howard County Sheriff Department Deputy Jimmy Mayes, the accident call came in around 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Debris from the wreckage forced officials to shut down the portion of the interstate at about 4 a.m.
The accident occurred when a 1998 black mustang wrecked out near the Sand Springs exit. A tractor trailer traveling west hit the Mustang while it was disabled on the highway and shortly after, another semi came along and hit the first tractor trailer.
One person died as a result of injuries suffered in the accident, while two others were transported to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries.
As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the westbound lane of I-20 in the vicinity of the accident was still closed.
The names of those involved in the accident had not been released at press time.
Units with the Big Spring Police Department, Department of Public Safety, Howard County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Transportation, along with Big Spring Emergency Medical Service personnel, responded to the accident.
