Thomas (Tom) Robert Mullen, 84, of Lubbock, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Dec. 9, 2012, at Convent Medical Center.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Christ the King Cathedral, Lubbock, Texas, with Monsignor Ben Kasteel and the Rev. Joy A. Thachil as celebrants. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park with military honors.
Rosary will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Home.
Tom was born to Thomas Howard and Kathryn Connor Mullen in Marshfield, Wisc., on Sept. 14, 1928. He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. He attended Georgetown University and University of San Francisco and finished his bachelor degree at the University of the Permian Basin in 1977.
He married Dorothy Elaine Fletcher on Feb. 2, 1952. He began his military career in June of 1950 and for the next 22 years was in service to his country. Major Mullen was part of the strategic air command, was an instructor pilot with the air training command and served as a Royal Air Force exchange officer in England.
He flew and instructed flying in the B-29, T-33 and T-38, Mark III and Mark IV, and, in the later years of his military career, he was a field maintenance squadron commander and served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. After his retirement he worked in the automobile business and as an income tax preparer.
Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, “Dottie”; sons, Patrick Mullen (Dana) of Montgomery, Texas, and Tom Mullen (Sonja) of Lubbock, Texas; daughters, Mary Longmire (Pat) of Divide, Colo., Shannon Nabors of Big Spring and Anne Mullen of Lubbock; grandchildren, Tom and Marianne Mullen of Lubbock, Texas, and Evan Nabors of Arcata, Calif.; sister, Ann Hirsh (Dave) of Walnut Creek, Calif.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Kelly (Jerry) of San Diego, Calif.; and his aunt, Jane Mantarro of Foley, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, James Fletcher Mullen; nephew, Nick Stanfel; and aunt, Dr. Angie Connor.
