Local law enforcement officials are investigating an assault that led to the death of a Big Spring man earlier this week.
Daniel Flores, 44, of Big Spring was pronounced dead Tuesday evening outside his Second Street residence by Howard County Justice of the Peace Quail Dobbs after family members discovered his body, according to officials with the Big Spring Police Department.
“Tuesday, at approximately 6:03 p.m., officers were dispatched to an unattended death at 1407 W. Second Street,” Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, said. “Officers were met by family members of the deceased and advised Flores had been found sitting in the passenger seat of an old vehicle on the family property and had passed away.”
Everett said an initial investigation showed Flores had suffered severe trauma prior to his death.
“The investigation revealed Flores had come home late Sunday night or early Monday morning and had been assaulted,” Everett said. “A family member observed Flores had been beaten and had obvious injuries.”
According to Everett, an autopsy was ordered by Dobbs and was performed in Lubbock Wednesday morning.
“The autopsy determined Flores died from serious internal injuries which were the result of an assault,” Everett said. “The location of the assault is still unknown. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and the investigation is ongoing.”
Everett said Flores was driving a brown Chevrolet Tahoe around the time the assault is believed to have occurred.
“Anyone with information regarding Flores' whereabouts Sunday night or early Monday morning is asked to contact law enforcement officers,” Everett said. “We need to establish where he was and what happened to him and citizens who possibly saw him could be a huge help to our investigation.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Big Spring Police Department at 432-264-2550 or Big Spring Area Crimestoppers at 432-264-TIPS (8477).
Information leading to an arrest or indictment could be worth up to $1,000, according to Crimestopper officials, and callers may remain anonymous, if they wish. No caller ID is ever used in conjunction with Crimestopper tips.
Funeral services for Flores will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
