The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce is taking steps to good health as it gears up for the 31st annual health fair, set to run from 8 a.m. until noon April 13.
“This event has been a successful event for the chamber in previous years and we are excited to be providing health information to the community once again through the help of our chamber members,” Chamber Executive Director Debbye ValVerde said. “There are so many health services right here in Big Spring and the health fair is one way we can showcase that.”
The fair will again take place at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, on the Sonic floor, and will include local health providers, demonstrations and screening opportunities. The West Texas Blood Mobile will be in the coliseum parking lot for those wanting to donate blood.
“We are very fortunate to have such wonderful entities that provide health/medical services to our Howard County residents,” ValVerde said. “Our goal with this health fair, as it is each year, is to gather all that information in one place and make it easily accessible to our community.”
Some of the demonstrations will include the Dance Gallery, YMCA, DSHS Bike safety, car seat safety and healthy cooking ideas. The fire safety trailer will be in the parking lot for kids to go through.
“Being healthy is about so much more than just visiting the doctor,” ValVerde said. “It’s about learning little tricks and trades that can lead to a healthy lifestyle so that we don’t have to go see the doctor too often.”
For local organizations wanting to take part, booth space is still available. Booths are $85 for a 10’x10’ space until March 28; any booth reserved after March 28 will be $100.
Sponsorships are also available. A corporate sponsorship is available for $500, which includes booth space and inclusion on the T-shirt.
“Each vendor is a vital part of this health fair as far as the information that is provided, but we don’t want to forget our sponsors, who are just as important to the success of the event,” ValVerde said.
“Each year we are able to continue to provide the health fair as a free experience to the community through the help of our sponsors. At this point, we have 14 corporate sponsors signed on.”
Corporate sponsors include Alon USA, Back in Motion Chiropractic Center, Dora Roberts Rehab, Encompass Home Health, Flo-Lite Screen Printing and Embroidery, GEO Group, H-E-B, KBST, KBYG, Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home, St. Joseph’s Home Health, Scenic Mountain Medical Center and West Texas VA Health Care Systems.
As always, Master the Mountain will also be taking place April 13 at Scenic Mountain State Park, but this year will be held at 1 p.m.
“Each year Master the Mountain and the Health Fair take place on the same day, but they are normally happening at the same time and people have to choose which one they want to go to,” ValVerde said. “This year, they will be able to take advantage of both.”
In addition to Master the Mountain, Healthy Woman will also be hosting its monthly event in the Cactus Room at noon. The presentation will feature Dr. Robert Hayes, orthopedic surgeon.
Admission to the health fair and Healthy Woman presentation is free.
