Kyrstin Baker was the top honoree at the annual Howard College Awards Convocation, held Tuesday in Garrett Coliseum.
Baker, a sophomore from Ira, was named recipient of the Presidential Award, given to the outstanding student at the college.
More than 200 HC students were honored during the convocation.
Baker was selected for the award based on academic excellence, participation in student life, leadership qualities and overall college spirit. While at Howard, she has been a cheerleader, Diplomat, resident assistant and has been active in the music department, Student Government Association and BSM. In addition, she was a member of the dean's list for academic achievement.
“Kyrstin has a fun-loving and friendly personality and is always there for you if you need her,” said Dr. Cheryl Sparks, who presented the award. “She also has a part-time job and manages to balance it all with a smile on her face.”
Sparks also presented awards to Patrick Flores and Kasie Skinner, who were named to the All-USA Academic Team. Flores, from Big Spring, is a member of the dean's list and Who's Who Among American Junior College Students and Phi Theta Kappa. He plans to transfer to the University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, where he will pursue a degree in accounting.
Skinner, from San Angelo, will graduate magna cum laude from Howard and is a member of the dean's list, Phi Thea Kappa and Who's Who Among american Junior College Students. After graduation, she plans to pursue a job in the dental hygiene field.
Other top award winners at Tuesday's convocation were:
• Outstanding Workforce Education Student — Stacy Ware.
• Outstanding Educator — Daniel Wooley.
• American Legion Citizenship Awards — Max McGilvary and Micah Tatum.
