Byron B. Smith Jr. of Pittsburg, Texas, died April 30, 2013, in Tyler, Texas, following a short illness. He was 82 years old.
Byron Braxton Smith Jr. was born in Odessa, Texas, to Byron B. Smith Sr. and Anna Hall Smith on Jan. 23, 1931. He was the oldest of five children. The Smith family moved to Arkansas, where, at age 16, Byron enlisted in the Army. He served in the Army, then re-inlisted in the Air Force. He was a staff sergeant and a medic during the Korean War, stationed in Ashiya, Japan.
Byron married Opal Taylor on Sept. 10, 1948. He worked at Cosden Oil Refinery in Big Spring, Texas, for 35 years. Byron and his family were members of Phillips Memorial Baptist Church and College Baptist Church in Big Spring. He was a Mason and Shriner.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pittsburg.
Byron B. Smith is survived by his first wife, Opal Taylor Smith of Mena, Ark., and their four children, Donna Smith Bouldin of Houston, D. Doug Smith of Magnolia, Denise Smith of Campbell and Dawn Smith Fowble of Del City, Okla.; his sister, Mae Smith Neisler of Arlington; brother, F. Farrel Smith and Sue Smith of Houston; his aunt, Dorothy Hall Polourde of Rosenburg; current wife, Dorothy Smith; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Byron B. Smith was preceeded in death by his parents, Anna Hall Smith and Byron B. Smith Sr.; and two sisters, Letha Smith Williams and Ann Smith Huggins.
Memorial services for Byron Smith will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Camp County Senior Center in Pittsburg, Texas. Services with military honors will by held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
