ANDREWS — For the second straight year, Big Spring has advanced to the area round of the playoff after winning a best-of-three series against Pecos in Game Two on Saturday, 5-4.
The Steers and the Mustangs were in a dogfight until the bottom of the seventh. Then, Big Spring's grit came through yet again.
Gunnar Kennedy — who pitched a complete-game for the Steers — led off with a double to kickstart a BSHS last-inning rally.
Clean-up batter Max Pappajohn was walked intentionally, but was erased on a Fielder's Choice when Joseph Morelion made contact.
Jarred DoPorto was also issued a walk, loading the bases for Brett Brorman, who ripped the first pitch up the middle, scoring Kennedy and ending the game with one swing of the bat.
Head Coach Bert Otto's team was eliminated in the area round last year by Mineral Wells and will face another tough opponent this year as they prepare for Lubbock Cooper on Thursday.
Game One will be played at Cooper at 7 p.m., with Game Two taking place at Steer Park on Saturday at 7 p.m. Should the series stretch to three games, the final outing will be held at Cooper.
MONAHANS — Van Horn — who made the playoffs by default after competing in a three-game district — was a bit outmatched by Forsan, as the Buffaloes routed the Eagles 10-0 in five innings.
The offensive engine was chugging along as five Buffs — Trevor Burchett, Marcus Cervantes, Tyler Evans, Clayton Galloway and Matthew Mims — recorded an RBI. Mims doubled and Garrett Kligora picked up a pair of singles.
Galloway was also stellar on the mound as he threw a no-hitter in the run-rule victory.
“We played well both games,” FHS Head Coach Jason Phillips said. “We had two dominant pitching performances and we played two of our better defensive games.”
The Buffs will be facing Borden County in the area round beginning Wednesday in Snyder at 4:30 p.m.
“I think we'll match up well with Borden County.” Phillips added. “They have a winning athletic program in all sports. They will be a tough team to beat, but if I think if we play the way we're capable we have a good shot at beating them.”
