STANTON — With a playoff spot on the line, the Stanton Buffaloes took care of business.
Stanton's 42-20 win over Forsan Friday in Stanton clinched a playoff spot for head coach John Peterson's squad. The Buffs earned the last spot right behind Idalou and Coahoma (those two teams play for a possible share of the district title next week). Stanton will finish up at Anson in Week 10.
“This is one of the goals we've had all year,” Peterson said. “Of course, we want to finish it out with another victory against Anson. This puts us in the playoffs, now we'll finish out the season next week.”
Stanton (8-1, 4-1 in district play) won Friday's game like it has all season: through tough defense. Forsan (3-6, 1-4) wasn't able to get much going on offense, especially through the air.
While Foster Burchett and Kolten Self connected a few times late in the game, the passing attack never truly got going. Forsan head coach Jason Phillips attributes that to the physical nature of Stanton's defense.
Stanton put two scores on the board quickly to make it 14-0, the first a Blake Evans touchdown run. Forsan turned things around in the second after a Patrick Robles interception turned into a Brendan Roman touchdown run.
After Stanton jumped out to a 28-6 second quarter lead, Forsan had an opportunity to cut its deficit before halftime after a 38-yard run by Ty Johnson to the Stanton 12-yard line.
However, two incomplete passes, a short run from Burchett and another incomplete pass on fourth down ended any chance of Forsan gaining momentum before the half.
A touchdown pass from Stanton quarterback Tyler Fulton to Ryan Brantley at the 9:34 mark in the fourth quarter for a 35-12 essentially sealed the deal for Stanton.
Forsan finishes the season next week at home against Hawley.
