GARDEN CITY — Garden City running back Josh Colunga provided words to live by as the Bearkats defend their six-man Division I state championship.
“I want another ring,” he said. “The best ring is the next one. That’s what we’re trying to go for. That’s our goal this year. Try to tell everyone we’re still No. 1.”
If they already haven’t, the Bearkats have the opportunity to continue proving they’re the team to beat against Robert Lee at 7:30 p.m. today at Robert Lee High School in Robert Lee in bi-district playoff action.
The Bearkats are still staying humble and grounded, even after finishing the regular season 10-0 with impressive wins over Borden County and Calvert, to name a few.
Colunga, Brett Chudej and head coach Vance Jones all said the only thing the Bearkats are worried about is Robert Lee tonight.
Beginning their title defense means this year’s Bearkats — minus four players from last year’s championship team — have the chance to set the bar even higher for the program.
Colunga noted how much the atmosphere around the program has changed during his time in Garden City. The community is devoted to the team and that’s enhanced his experience. Having the chance to keep that excitement around the program with another title is exciting.
